Replacement usually pays off from around fifteen years. From that age breakdowns and parts costs rise, and a modern high-efficiency boiler is more economical: the efficiency gap with an old boiler shows noticeably on the gas bill. A hybrid combines your boiler with an electric heat pump and saves gas without your home needing to be perfectly insulated; a full heat pump requires good insulation and low-temperature emitters (underfloor heating or large radiators). Both attract varying subsidies — ask the engineer about the current scheme.
